At a glance
- Jeep
- Ram
Jeep and Ram offer both Active Driving Assist and explicitly named Hands-Free Active Driving Assist. That extra wording matters: the ordinary system requires hands on the wheel. A listing that says only “Active Driving Assist” is not enough to establish hands-free capability.
- Driver responsibility
- Hands-free on approved highways; eyes on road
- Roads & conditions
- Preapproved restricted-access highways; confirm the brand’s coverage map
- Equipment & cost
- Required equipment plus connected services; published three-year trial, then paid subscription
Two versions with different operating rules
The hands-free system uses approved highway coverage and driver monitoring. You remain responsible for the drive and must keep watching the road. Ordinary Active Driving Assist is a hands-on feature.
| Version | Driver role | Road check |
|---|---|---|
| Active Driving Assist | Hands on the wheel; monitor continuously | Suitable lane markings and the model’s operating conditions |
| Hands-Free Active Driving Assist | Hands may come off only when permitted; eyes remain on road | Preapproved restricted-access highways and system availability |
Eligible vehicles and model-year differences
Start with the Grand Cherokee or Grand Cherokee L and Ram 1500 entries in our catalog, then confirm the specific trim and optional package. The same model can be sold with very different equipment.
Check what happens when leaving supported highway coverage. Ram’s documentation identifies model-year differences in whether hands-on assistance remains available outside the hands-free operating area. Do not assume that upgrading to the hands-free package produces identical fallback behavior on every Jeep and Ram.
Jeep Connect and Ram Connect
Jeep’s official page describes a required Jeep Connect Vehicle Package with a three-year trial followed by a paid subscription. Ram describes its Hands-Free Highway Assist Ram Connect package with a similar trial structure. Confirm the terms and renewal price for the actual VIN.
For a used vehicle, ask when the included service started and how much remains. Include any equipment package and service fees in the quote; the vehicle’s advertised base price is only part of the comparison.
Check the trip and the handover
Look up your regular highway segments on the appropriate compatible-road map. Then ask for a demonstration of the cluster indications, driver-attention alerts and transitions when assistance becomes unavailable.
- Verify that the build sheet explicitly says “Hands-Free.”
- Confirm service activation in the correct owner account.
- Read the manual’s restrictions for weather, roadworks and any towing use before relying on assistance during those trips.
Models in our catalog
Use these entries to compare models and source-linked prices, then check the exact trim, equipment and service entitlement. A model appearing in the catalog does not mean every configuration includes the system.

Common questions
Can hands-on Active Driving Assist become hands-free just by subscribing?
Do not assume so. The car needs the specific hands-free equipment as well as the applicable service entitlement.
Can it be used on any highway?
No. The hands-free feature is restricted to supported roadways and qualifying conditions. Check the official map and vehicle indication.
