Compare Driving Assistance Systems

Compare supervised highway assistance, low-speed hands-free systems and hands-on driver assistance by road coverage, vehicle requirements and ownership cost.

Compare the essentials

Choose the kind of assistance you need, then open a system name for its vehicles, equipment and operating limits. These groups describe use cases; they are not SAE automation levels or performance rankings.

Highway & broader supervised assistance

Hands-free permission depends on the system and conditions. All systems below require continuous driver supervision. FSD and Rivian have different road scopes from highway-focused assistance.

Low-speed hands-free assistance

These features target qualifying highway congestion. Their low-speed operating limits matter when comparing them with assistance for flowing highway traffic.

Hands-free only in qualifying congestion; keep watching the roadLow-speed traffic on supported controlled-access freeways; approximately 25 mph or less, per model manualRequires eligible equipment and the applicable active Drive Connect trial or subscription

Hands-on driving assistance

Keep hands on the wheel and supervise continuously. The Mercedes row covers ordinary assistance; its guide separately explains DRIVE PILOT and the different SAE Level 3 responsibilities.

SystemDriving responsibilityWhere it is intended to workEquipment & US cost reference
Driver remains engaged; follow hands-on and attention requirementsLane and traffic conditions permitted by the vehicle’s assistance packageEquipment and activation vary by model; DRIVE PILOT has separate eligibility and terms

Buying guides & head-to-head comparisons

Three questions that narrow the field

  1. Does it support the roads you drive, at the speeds and conditions you encounter?
  2. Does the specific vehicle have the required equipment and active entitlement?
  3. What is the combined equipment and service cost over your ownership period?
