Subaru EyeSight & Highway Hands-Free Assist

Understand how Outback’s Highway Hands-Free Assist differs from ordinary EyeSight, including eligible trims, roads and software checks.

At a glance

  • Subaru

EyeSight is Subaru’s wider driver-assistance technology. Its presence alone does not mean a Subaru supports hands-free driving. The 2026 Outback’s Highway Hands-Free Assist is a specific capability on eligible trims.

Which Outback should you look for?

Subaru lists Hands-Free Assist as standard on the 2026 Outback Touring and Touring XT. Other trims should not be treated as hands-free simply because they include EyeSight or adaptive cruise control.

Check the model year and trim on the VIN-specific build information. A badge, dealer photograph or generic Outback feature page may describe a different configuration from the vehicle offered for sale.

Where hands-free operation is intended

Subaru describes automatic steering support on most interstate highways when the system’s conditions are met. The instrument cluster indicates availability and operation. The driver must keep eyes on the road; this is not driverless operation.

Treat your own route as the useful test. A highway category is not a promise of uninterrupted assistance through every interchange, work zone or stretch of poor lane markings. Follow the manual and be ready to resume control whenever required.

Software and ownership cost

Subaru announced a no-cost Highway Hands-Free Assist update for eligible 2026 Outback Touring and Touring XT vehicles in 2026. Before collecting a car, ask whether any applicable update has been completed and have the feature demonstrated.

A no-cost update is different from a guarantee about every future service or every ownership expense. Confirm the equipped vehicle quote and any applicable account or service conditions. Our catalog’s Touring price is a starting reference, so compare destination, taxes and optional equipment on the actual quote.

A practical buying check

If highway trips are the reason for choosing this trim, compare the feature on the same kinds of roads you regularly drive. Also evaluate how the car behaves when assistance is unavailable; ordinary comfort and visibility still matter.

  • Confirm Touring or Touring XT and the correct model year.
  • Ask the retailer to verify software and explain availability indications.
  • Read the manual’s operating conditions and driver-monitoring requirements.
  • Check the full vehicle price before comparing it with another brand’s base MSRP.

Common questions

Does all EyeSight equipment allow hands-free driving?

No. Highway Hands-Free Assist is a specific feature. Verify its inclusion on the exact model and trim.

Can I look away while it is active?

No. Subaru requires attention to the road. Hands-free assistance does not mean eyes-off driving.
