- Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz uses several names for features with very different responsibilities. DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist support the driver. DRIVE PILOT is a separate conditional-automation system, and its name should not be used as shorthand for an ordinary Driver Assistance Package.
- Driver responsibility
- Driver remains engaged; follow hands-on and attention requirements
- Roads & conditions
- Lane and traffic conditions permitted by the vehicle’s assistance package
- Equipment & cost
- Equipment and activation vary by model; DRIVE PILOT has separate eligibility and terms
Decode the system names
Mercedes-Benz describes DISTRONIC as speed and following-distance assistance. Active Steering Assist adds continuous steering support to help center the vehicle. These features remain supervised SAE Level 2 assistance.
| Name | Role |
|---|---|
| Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC | Helps maintain speed and distance; does not by itself establish continuous steering assistance. |
| Active Steering Assist | Supports lane centering with the required DISTRONIC functionality. |
| Active Lane Keeping Assist | Responds to unintended lane departure; different from continuous lane centering. |
| DRIVE PILOT | A distinct conditional-automation feature with its own hardware, operating domain and takeover rules. |
DRIVE PILOT and the US buying question
DRIVE PILOT’s SAE Level 3 role differs from the hands-on assistance compared in our table. Mercedes publishes separate operating instructions and terms requiring the customer to be ready to take over when prompted. A vehicle with DISTRONIC is not automatically equipped or entitled to use DRIVE PILOT.
Reporting in 2026 describes Mercedes pausing DRIVE PILOT for revised models. That report does not establish that every earlier equipped car has lost support, nor that a car for sale today can activate it. Ask Mercedes to confirm the exact VIN’s equipment, supported US locations and current service eligibility before relying on this feature in a purchase.
Choose the right package for the driving you do
For ordinary supervised assistance, compare the actual functions on the build sheet: distance control, lane centering and any lane-change support. Package names and included equipment differ between model years.
For DRIVE PILOT specifically, request documentation for that system rather than a generic driver-assistance brochure. A demonstration or approval in another country does not establish the same operation in the United States.
- Ask which system the seller is demonstrating and what the driver must do while it is active.
- Confirm the vehicle’s software, hardware and any activation entitlement.
- Check where the feature is permitted, how it becomes available and how it requests a takeover.
Compare the complete price
Separate the price of the car from its optional equipment and any separately purchased service. Obtain a written quote identifying the package and VIN. For a used vehicle, confirm which benefits transfer and which require a new account or agreement.
Our homepage Mercedes entry describes the supervised assistance in the current catalog. It should not be read as a list of DRIVE PILOT-equipped vehicles.

Common questions
Is DISTRONIC a self-driving system?
No. It provides speed and distance assistance. The ordinary assistance package still requires an engaged driver.
Is SAE Level 3 the same as this site’s Level 3 badge?
No. Our JSL Level 3 grouping means supervised hands-free assistance. SAE Level 3 conditional automation has a different driver role and operating framework; see our Automation Levels guide.
