At a glance
Verify the exact vehicle’s FSD entitlement, hardware and ownership-transfer terms before paying a premium. A demonstration, software version or “FSD capable” listing does not by itself prove that ongoing FSD access is included.
Purchased, subscribed or merely capable?
Tesla distinguishes purchased access from subscriptions and also describes separate terms for Luxe Package access. Ask which arrangement applies to the VIN you are buying. If the evidence is incomplete, treat the value of the claimed included software as unverified.
| Seller’s claim | What it might mean | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| FSD purchased outright | A previous owner bought a vehicle-level entitlement | The package remains attached to this vehicle and was not moved under a transfer offer. |
| FSD subscription active | The current owner pays for access | Budget for your own subscription; Tesla says the seller’s subscription does not pass to you. |
| FSD computer / FSD capable | Hardware may support eligible software | Hardware wording is not evidence that the software package is included. |
| Trial or bundled access | Access may be temporary or subject to separate terms | Remaining term, eligibility and what happens after ownership changes. |
Collect evidence before agreeing on the premium
Our checklist is a buying aid. It cannot read a vehicle’s records, verify a seller’s claim or guarantee post-sale access. Request confirmation for your exact purchase rather than treating another owner’s experience as a rule.
- Match the VIN on the car, listing and purchase documents.
- With the seller, inspect Controls → Software and the included package information. Record the wording and any expiry or subscription details.
- Ask for supporting purchase documentation; a software version alone is not a receipt for an entitlement.
- Check hardware and available upgrades for this vehicle. Model name and year are useful context, not a substitute for vehicle-specific information.
- Ask Tesla to clarify conflicting package information before making a non-refundable commitment.
- Have the sale paperwork identify the represented software package. Resolve uncertainty before assigning it a purchase premium.
Hardware eligibility is a separate question
Tesla’s subscription guidance says prerequisite hardware work may cost extra. An included software entitlement and the ability to run a particular software release are separate questions. Ask which features are available on this car now, which require an update or service, and what additional work would cost.
Test the actual vehicle in accordance with its manual. Keep the driving task supervised throughout; a successful demonstration does not establish autonomous capability or promise future features.
Account transfer is not the same as moving FSD
Adding a purchased used vehicle to your Tesla Account is the ownership process. Moving a purchased FSD entitlement from an old car to a different car is a separate program. Tesla’s published transfer offer has ended; an old promotional page is not an ongoing entitlement to move the software.
For a private purchase, coordinate the vehicle-account transfer and check your access after the transfer completes. A vehicle sold through a dealer or manufacturer needs the same attention to the package actually included in that transaction.
Compare the premium with your expected paid use
Compare otherwise similar vehicles before valuing an FSD premium. Mileage, condition, battery, warranty and accident history can outweigh the software difference. A cheap car needing repairs is not necessarily a better FSD purchase.
Use the calculator below as a spending comparison, not an appraisal. Enter the premium you would pay and the monthly price you are eligible for. It excludes tax, repairs, upgrades, trials, resale value and changes to prices or features.

Common questions
Does the seller’s FSD subscription transfer?
Tesla says a buyer must subscribe using their own account when the previous owner subscribed. Distinguish that situation from FSD previously purchased outright.
Does “FSD computer” mean FSD is included?
No. It describes hardware. Verify the software entitlement and access terms separately.
