Rivian Autonomy+: Universal Hands-Free, Vehicles & Cost

Understand Rivian’s hands-free features, Gen 1 versus Gen 2 hardware, R2 eligibility and Autonomy+ purchase options.

At a glance

  • Rivian

Autonomy+ is Rivian’s optional driver-assistance offering. Universal Hands-Free is one of its features. It can help with steering and speed while you supervise, but it does not make a Rivian a driverless car.

Driver responsibility
Eyes on road; supervise continuously and be ready to take control
Roads & conditions
Supported roads with clearly marked lanes; Universal Hands-Free does not obey traffic lights or stop signs
Equipment & cost
Published reference: $49.99/month or $2,500 upfront; verify the vehicle’s included offer

Start with the vehicle generation

Rivian’s current Universal Hands-Free documentation covers Gen 2 R1 vehicles and R2. An older R1S or R1T with Driver+ should not be assumed to have the same hardware, features or upgrade eligibility. For a used vehicle, identify its generation before comparing software packages.

Vehicle / systemWhat to check
Gen 1 R1S / R1T with Driver+Use the Gen 1 manual and feature list; do not assume an Autonomy+ purchase adds Gen 2 capability.
Gen 2 R1S / R1TConfirm installed software, enabled features and an active Autonomy+ entitlement.
R2Check the specific configuration, included package and delivered software.

Where Universal Hands-Free works

Rivian describes operation on supported roads with painted lane lines, extending beyond limited-access highways. The driver remains responsible for watching traffic and taking over when needed. Use the in-vehicle availability indication rather than assuming every marked road qualifies.

A crucial limitation: Universal Hands-Free does not stop or slow for traffic signals or stop signs. Road coverage alone does not establish intersection handling. Rivian’s roadmap discusses Point-to-Point assistance separately; check the released feature documentation for the exact vehicle before treating a planned capability as available.

Subscription versus upfront purchase

Rivian’s published Autonomy+ reference is $49.99 per month or $2,500 as a one-time purchase, with a 60-day trial on new vehicles. Some configurations have different included offers. Confirm the terms shown for the vehicle and account before paying.

At an unchanged monthly rate, 50 paid months cost $2,499.50; the upfront price becomes lower during month 51. That comparison excludes trials, tax, included offers and future price changes. Rivian says a one-time upgrade stays with the vehicle and lasts for the supported lifetime of its delivered hardware.

  • For a used vehicle, ask whether the upgrade is already attached to the VIN.
  • Compare the planned ownership period with the paid subscription period.
  • Base the purchase on features you can use now, even when a roadmap promises more.

A useful demonstration before buying

Ask to see the installed software version and Autonomy+ status. On an appropriate route, have the seller demonstrate how the vehicle signals availability, requests attention and hands control back. Check your normal roads separately from a marketing coverage total.

Common questions

Is Autonomy+ the same as Driver+?

No. The names refer to different offerings and hardware generations. Verify the vehicle generation and its supported software before assuming feature parity.

Does Universal Hands-Free mean I can stop watching the road?

No. It is supervised assistance. You remain responsible for traffic, intersections and intervention.
